Principles by Ray Dalio

founder of  Bridgewater Associates

the first person worked on commodity futures from HBS, so after graduation he was the top talent to hire in the industry as stock economy unraveled while commodities market is soaring.

his goal is to have meaningful work and meaningful relationships.

what i want: break dependencies on money, having caring family

what is true: ?

what you should do to achieve #1 in light of #2

what r u going to do about it?

1979-1982, Bridgewater is back to square one, the company lost so much money. He identified 3 fundamental problems: 1) I was arrogant 2) history repeats and understanding events are important to predict futures 3) You can't estimate exact time to market. Also he found several principles: 1) seek the smartest person who disagree with me, try to understand their reasoning 2) develop/test/systemize timeless and universal principles 3) balance risks keep the big upside while reducing the downside

1983-1994

P44, invented a new way to show profit: core business, speculative profits and losses. This way a client can understand what a risk-neutral position is. sometimes a client can speculate more intentionally

beta: return of the market, passive,
alpha: return comes form betting against others, active

All weather Portfolio, use different strategies for 4 dimensions of growth and inflation -> risk parity investing

p75, used baseball cards to record MBTI

p82, we predicted 2008 financial crisis based on our internal model

p86, in 2010, decided to make Principle public to face misconception of a company promoted by the press. he stepped out as CEO in 2010

p160, you shouldn't upset if u find out that you're bad at sth-- you should be happy that you found out, because knowing that and dealing with it will improve your chances of getting what u want

p174, view painful problem as potential improvement point

p180, mental map of 2 axis, humble/open-minded vs what u know

p184, lower-level instinct(Mr Hyde) vs higher-level consciousness(Dr, Jekyll)

  • make someone do sth: If you want to up your career ladder quickly. you must know how to delegate work to someone else in your team. you should know how to motivate them and make them work for you and themselves.

  • let someone do sth: one of the issue to assign a task to employee is tricky. we needed someone to distribute tasks. it required a lot of interaction between people. it didn't work well. Instead we just create a lot of potential tasks into issue tracking system. just let them choose their next task. it's been working pretty well since then.

  • get someone to do sth: if someone ask to me what's the hardest to thing to do? then i would answer. it's get my son to do something that i want him to do.

  1. Do you think it's good to make friends online?
I think it’s good to have. Why not? but it definitely has a different purpose compared to conventional friends. They usually get to know each other for a specific purpose. For example, if you want to join a specific study club online. All these friends have the same purpose. They don’t usually talk about private things much like real friends. I think that is a big difference. but it makes you expand your life boundary much larger. but the depth is less.

  2. What are the disadvantages of social networking apps? it literally gets rid of my spare time pretty easily. Once I start using SNS app, time flies. If i review my SNS activities objectively, There are nothing useful scenarios.

sit out

Every mother has instincts to protect their child. my wife is same. Whenever my son try to do some modestly risky action,  my wife interrupts and tried to stop it. just because it's little dangerous not much. I think it prevents my son from learning lessons from them. So I always talks to my wife. please give him an opportunity to fail. My wife should learn how to sit things out.

sit well(right) with

At previous get-together, They gave us a present. since it's kind of regular get-together between us. I can't sit well with me. I had to prepare something.

-How you want to improve it

-And how you feel about it

I realized i'm good at controlling circular object to the desired position. something like 구슬치기, billiard. It ususally requires the right amount of speed and angle.

Also I have a pretty decent concentration ability. once i concentrate, I hardly know if someone talks to me.

  1. Is it possible for us to know whether children who are 3 or 4 years old will become musicians and painters when they grow up?

I don't think so.

recent gun shooting at Arizona

There was shocking news about gun-shooting in Atlanta. People say it's kind of hate crime for Asian-Americans. So there is a movement to make the issue more public and open so that other people could know this is wrong and should be stopped. It's just like another version of "Black lives matter". but this time the subject changed from Black to Asian-American.

Why those kind problems happen in USA frequently? I think the main reason would be a gun problem in USA. Buying gun is as easy as buying grocery at the store. There is a back ground check to prevent any potential gun accident. But it's not enough.

searching houses

I have been searching for a place to live for purchase purposes(for the purpose of purchasing). At first, I searched for a new place to rent. But my wife and I realized that the monthly rent is too high and It's kind of throwaway money. It's literally a waste of money. That's why I'm consider buying a new house. Instead of spending money on rent, make it pay for mortgage and interests. money could be used for mortgage.

Based on online mortgage calculator, the monthly mortgage payment for $550,000 with 20 years armortization period is around $2500, which is my current monthly rent. It means I can buy a $550K house with my rent. If I increase my down payment, then i can buy a more expensive house too. I think it surely justify our home buying plan.

our criteria are the following:
  1. more than 1000 sqft. my wife likes large spaces.
  2. commute time to downtown should be within an hour.
  3. a good secondary school for my son.
I've already visited several houses with/without a realtor. The most satisfying home among them is the one in the Burke mountain in Coquitlam. 3bed room town house is around $800K. It's 3 floors and 1500 sqrt. It has side by side(double) garage on the first floor, which I like a lot. It's like my dream home in Canada. but the commute to downtown could be waste of time. It takes around 1.5 hours, which is unacceptable.

I'm keep looking at online house listing sites and will contact another realtor soon. I hope I can find the right house for our family.

iPhone

I bought an iPhone for the first time in my life. I'd always wanted it since the first iPhone launched in 2007. Finally one of my wish lists has been marked as done. It's present to myself for 2020. I wanna say to myself: "You did a good job and thank you for your hard work."

There were several reasons I couldn't buy it when I was working for Samsung. First, I didn't want to get in trouble from company management. There was a rumor that management would make a list who din't use Samsung phone and report it. Second, Samsung is one of the highest security workplaces in Korea. Every gate is secured by metal detectors and x-ray equipment. Every employee's belongings will be scanned and if a detector find something suspicious. Then security guard will scan your belongings once again. Every phone camera should be sealed by a sticker so that it can't take a picture inside the company. but for Samsung phone, if you install MCM software, it will automatically block your camera when you enter the company and  it will be unlocked when you leave. But iPhone couldn't. Samsung phone gave me more convenience at that time. That's why.

I think i will like iPhone a lot. Even though i haven't use it a lot, I think it's pretty decent phone ever in my life. I look forward to seeing a lot of wow factor. There must be a reason a lot of people keep using iPhone. I wanna find why.

survival instinct

After seeing Interstellar movie, one of the quote i can't forget is about the survival instinct. Mann, Matt Damon, was talking about it to Cooper. suddenly He attacked Cooper simply to survive even though he well trained elite astronaut in Earth.

some quote from the movie:

  • a machine doesn't improvise well because you can't program a fear of death. our survival instinct is the single greatest source of the inspiration.
  • You're feeling it, aren't you? the survival instinct. that's what drive me. that's what drives all of us. And It's what's gonna save us.
Also i remember that the mechanism under the fear is to increase the chances of survival. Think about a person without any fear. He will not prepare for upcoming risks and will not be cautious for unknown thing. It definitely has been enhanced chances of survival of all life feeling a fear.

theses day, It's been happening to me. I wake up at around 5 in the morning to be afraid of the progress of the task I'm doing in the current company. first delivery time is the end of this year. but the requirements are still unclear lots of integrations are required with different teams and there are still unknown areas. Simply I'm much worried about the current progress.

Handling ambiguity is always difficult to me. Let's see what can be learn from this and how I can handle those. There must be a way to do well.

https://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=001&oid=008&aid=0004402708&lfrom=twitter&spi_ref=m_news_twitter

PN - chapter 25. root of the problem

skinny,
why all parents are obeyed to the king without a exception?
The king uses a special medicine against the adults that make people weak and sleepy. Since its effect goes away quickly, they added it to every meals they serve. it's secret of the king.

When Simon knew Sir Tode lied that He was a dragon slayer, why he talked about his younger brother?
certainly, Simon felt betrayed when he first heard it. but we are soon expecting fierce battle with the enemies. He couldn't simply blame Sir Tode. It will be ended up with lose from the battle. He instantly figured out a story that would encourage him to be more brave. It's about his brother story pretty much same with Sir Tode's story. as Simon expected, both of them lead the battle as a victory.
Simon was definitely very wise enough to support Peg princess.

  1. 여권과 work permit
  4. 생활 기록부(school records II)
  5. ID (운전면허증)
이 서류를 가지고 밴쿠버의 DRPC(District Reception and Placement Centre)에 가서 자녀를 등록하면 된다.

https://cafe.naver.com/mystudyabc/5715

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yanflex.craigslist
